Australian testing captain Tim Paine has apologized to New Zealand for striking off the Black Caps ahead of their World Testing Championship (WTC) triumph over India.

Paine had predicted that India would “comfortably” beat Kane Williamson’s side in the WTC final, only to be ridiculed on social media after New Zealand claimed an eight-wicket victory at Southampton this week.

“We’re all wrong. I escaped Kiwi fans a bit, so I thought I would go on air and eat a humble pie,” Paine told New Zealand radio station Newstalk. ZB.

“I think the New Zealanders played exceptionally. It’s always a pleasure to see how they do it.

“For such a small nation – I’m from Tasmania, which is obviously our smallest resource state and we’re above our weight – so I certainly respect what the Kiwis are doing on the international stage.”

Paine’s Australia were beaten 2-1 by severely exhausted India over the summer at home, despite the Tourists losing captain Virat Kohli after the first test and all of their first-choice attack to injury during the four-game series.
