Threefoot Building overcame many obstacles
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – The Threefoot Hotel has now been open for about two weeks, but it has taken years and even decades.
The 16-story historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building operated as an office building for several decades, but by the mid-1990s it was mostly abandoned.
Several years ago, the Threefoot Preservation Society was formed to help save the building, which, to their surprise, encountered quite a bit of opposition.
“Then (Mayor) Percy (Bland) walked in, the same proposal as we start stabilizing the building and renovating it and starting to generate interest in the building,” said Elliott Street, historian and archivist for Threefoot Building. “So, Lord of mercy, I couldn’t believe there were so many people against it. What is the problem? Why against? Oh, there’s a stream over there. Well, there is a stream in all the subdivisions of our basements.
