The pain and triumph of changing the referee’s “unfinished votes”

“This idea was probably the craziest idea I’ve ever been presented with … trying to recreate our son,” says Manuel Oliver, father of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver and co-founder and director Creative from Change the Ref. “The process was very difficult. We must have seen our son speak, knowing that he is not there.”

As painful as it may have been to produce, Change the Ref’s “The Unfinished Votes” was a remarkable and groundbreaking creative piece in the fight against gun violence. Manuel and his wife Patricia were incredibly resourceful and creative in helping Joaquin become a posthumous advocate, and “Unfinished Votes”, winning a dozen Clios, earned Change the Ref the honor of Announcer. of the Clio Health year for 2020-2021.

In the video above, Manuel talks more about the campaign and gun violence in general as a public health crisis. Below, see the “Incomplete Votes” case study. And to see all the 2020-2021 Clio Health winners, visit
