Fort Myers Women’s Weightlifting Wins District; Palmetto Ridge fight wins region

Here’s a roundup of high school sports in Southwest Florida on Friday, January 21.

Fort Myers won its second straight Class 2A-District 14 women’s weightlifting title, compiling 94 team points overall, more than double second-place Mariner (43) on Friday afternoon.

“I think the biggest part or biggest contributing factor to being able to repeat is your senior leadership,” Green Wave coach Pat Casey said. “The girls we had on our team last year who were able to win this championship, bringing them back showing the other girls what it took in the weight room, you know, to come here and win again today.”

Casey and the Green Wave will look to continue their success at next week’s regional meet at Charlotte High.

“Very proud of the girls and what they’re able to accomplish,” Casey said. “They have worked all season for this moment and thanks to their efforts throughout the season, we are able to win the district championship today.”

Palmetto Ridge 54, Osceola 20

Coach Blaine Ison and the Bears were crowned 3A regional champions at the FHSAA State Doubles Championships in Kissimmee after defeating Osceola on Friday night. After dropping Game 1 in the 138-pound division, Palmetto Ridge would win 10 of the next 13 games to seal the victory.

“I’m very proud of how our team prepared and executed today in our game,” Ison said.

The Bears will face 3A powerhouse South Dade in Saturday’s semifinals, a test Ison and his team are ready to face.

“We are fully prepared and ready to go to war tomorrow morning,” Ison said. “Opportunities like these are what make great moments. We know it won’t be easy to destroy a powerhouse like South Dade.
