EUP Principals Recognize Dozens of Accomplished Students at Awards Banquet

Each year, the EUP Secondary Principal Association recognizes the academically most successful high school students in the Eastern Upper Peninsula with the EUP Principals Award.

To be eligible for the award, students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher and a minimum SAT score of 1160 or a minimum ACT score of 24.

To celebrate the students, the EUP Secondary Principals Association hosts an annual banquet at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island where these students can be recognized and rewarded. This year, winners from each eligible school district have been announced.

Brimley students

Stephanie Bishop is a member of Student Council, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Robotics. Bishop is studying psychology at Lake Superior State University.

Colin Hopper is a football player and biker, he plans to be a postman after graduation.

Carlie Keyser is a softball player and a member of the National Honor Society and softball team. She is currently undecided about where she wants to attend college.

Siersha Miller is a volleyball player and member of the National Honor Society. Miller will study gastroenterology at Michigan State University’s Lyman Briggs College.

Grady Newland participates in school football, basketball, baseball and golf. He will attend Michigan State University to study law and become a lawyer.

Luke Slater is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the cross country, basketball, track and field, and golf teams. Slater will study chemical engineering at Michigan Tech.

Shelby Smart is a member of student council, the Key Club, and the National Honor Society. Smart plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in sports science and a master’s degree in athletic training from Northern Michigan University.

Alanna VanderMeer is on the volleyball and track teams as well as student council and the National Honors Society. VanderMeer plans to study athletic training at Northern Central Michigan College before earning his doctorate. in occupational therapy.

Cedarville students

Meredith Emigh serves on the National Honors Society, Youth Advisory Council and Student Council. She also does athletics and plays golf and volleyball. Emigh will study business at Michigan State University.

Ben Davis is a member of the National Honors Society as well as a member of the robotics club and a member of the quiz bowl team. He plans to study computer science at Lake Superior State University.

Sam Harman is part of the robotics club and wants to study engineering at Lake Superior State University.

Zachary Izzard is a member of the robotics club and will join the workforce right out of school.

DeTour Students

Claire Kuusinen is the class president and homecoming queen and is a member of several school-related groups including the National Honor Society, Homecoming Committee, Homecoming Committee, Lutheran Church Youth Group, basketball, track and field, volleyball, ski club, theater and band. Kuusinen will attend Lake Superior State University, but hasn’t decided on her major yet.

Garrett Newell is the King of Homecoming, a National State History Day finalist, and has been in the National Honor Society, student government, ski club, basketball, track and field, and weightlifting.

Engadine students

Drew French is class president, student council representative, vice president of the Key Club, and also participates in soccer, basketball, track and field, golf, and youth groups. He will study engineering at Michigan Technological University.

OCS students

William Parish plays on the basketball, track and field, and soccer teams. He hopes to learn carpentry or steelwork at an undecided trade school.

Ruyard students

Andrew Borowski is in the National Honor Society and in the Robotics and Drama Club. Borowski will learn accounting at the University of Michigan Flint.

Wyatt Hunt is on the robotics, cross country, drama and quiz teams as well as the National Honor Society and student government. He will study mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University.

Ross Malaska is in the National Honor Society and is on the Drama, Robotics, and Quiz Bowl teams. He wants to study computer engineering at Michigan Technological University.

Gabriel McKerchie is part of the music group, the robotics club and a member of the swimming team. He has yet to choose between Lake Superior State University and Michigan State University, he will study pre-law.

Madison Mills is a member of the Youth Tribal Council, Art Club, Student Government, and Youth Advisory Council. She plans to study health sciences at Bay Mills Community College.

Tristin Smith is in volleyball, basketball, track and field, youth group, student government, and the National Honor Society. He hasn’t decided where he will go to college yet, but he wants to study business administration.

Aimee Spring is a member of the National Honor Society, Tribal Youth Council, Student Government, Quiz Bowl Team, and Robotics Club. She will attend Bay Mills Community College for Business Administration.

Madison Strivens is a member of the Youth Advisory Council and is on the cross country and swim teams. She will attend Ohio Northern University.

Ethan Suggit is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the football, cross country, track and field, basketball, baseball and Lions Club teams. He wants to study actuarial science at Spring Arbor University.

Pickford students

Sydney Johnson is on the National Honor Society, music, basketball and volleyball teams. She will study mechanical engineering at Lake Superior State University.

Colin Thompson is in Band, Football, Track, Robotics Club, Student Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the National Honor Society. He will attend Lake Superior State University.

Hunter Hagen is on the National Honor Society, football, basketball, track and field, baseball, quiz and debate teams. He will join the workforce directly to carry out custom masonry and tiling work.

St. Ignatius students

Makayla Hess serves in the National Honor Society, Student Council, Youth Advisory Council, Athletics and Cross Country. She would pursue a career in social work after attending North Central University in Minnesota.

Allison Schultz is a basketball and track player and is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Youth Advisory Council. She will play college-level basketball at Ferris State University and pursue a degree in plastic engineering,

Jacob Shipley is a member of the National Honor Society and the football team. He is undecided about where he wants to go to college.

Newberry students

Jacob Brown is on the hockey, football and track teams. He will pursue engineering studies at Michigan Technological University.

Mackenzie Dunbar is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and plays basketball and softball. Dunbar will study to become a pediatric physical therapist at Grand Valley State University.

Priya Rao is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Student Council. Rao will study to become a business consultant at the University of Michigan.

Sault Area Students

Mackenzie Anderson is a member of Business Professionals of America, the National Honor Society and Students United. She will study accounting at Northern Michigan University.

Joanne Arbic is on the Business Professionals of America, the National Honor Society, the Homecoming Court, and the swim and track teams. Arbic will be pursuing a degree in biology from Northern Michigan University.

Corey Armstrong is a member of the Business Professionals of America, the National Honor Society, the quiz bowl team, the book club, and is a student ambassador for technical education. He will study computer science at the University of Michigan.

Jaelyn Azevedo is President of Student Government and a Fellow of the National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, and Students United. Azevedo will pursue a career in fashion design at Kent State University in hopes of one day opening her own boutique.

Magdalene Bauer is part of the National Honor Society, the quiz bowl team, the Soo Community group and the Soo Youth Orchestra. She is undecided about her choice of school but wants to study music pedagogy to teach music at secondary level.

Hannah-Louise Burd is a volleyball and soccer player as well as a member of the National Honor Society and a homecoming volunteer. Burd will study marine science at Eckerd College.

Mackenzie Clayton is a member of the National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, and The Band. Clayton will study psychology at Ferris State University.

Delaney Cushman is an AP Fellow and a member of Business Professionals of America and Students United. Cushman will study neuroscience at Harvard University.

David Daley is on the track team, he will be studying accounting at Bay Mills Community College.

Henry Finfrock will attend Michigan State University.

Austin Gervais is part of the drama club and is undecided on his choice of colleges.

Dayton Graham will attend Lake Superior State University.

Joseph Hammock is a member of the Business Professionals of America and the National Honor Society. He will pursue studies in computer science at Central Michigan University.

Mya Hazley is a member of the quiz bowl team, she will be studying biochemistry at Ferris State University.

Anna Hildebrand is on the swim and soccer teams as well as the National Honor Society. She is undecided about her college of choice, but will pursue a degree in marine biology.

Keenan Hoffman will be pursuing a degree in civil engineering at Michigan State University.

Emily Kiekhaefer is a member of the National Honor Society, swim and track teams. She will study law or political journalism at the University of Michigan.

Hayden Klamerus is a basketball player and is part of the National Honor Society. Klamerus will study oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Alyvia Lori serves on the Homecoming Committee, the National Honor Society, and the track and swim teams. Lori will be pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University.

Elizabeth Ohman is a member of the National Honor Society and the swim and golf teams. Ohman is undecided on her college of choice but will pursue a degree in psychology.

Kyle Pine is on the track team and will be attending Northern Michigan University.

Shaelyn Reno is a member of the Student Advisory Council and the National Honor Society. Reno will study cyber defense at Northern Michigan University.

Dylan Szabo is a member of the track team and is undecided about his choice of college.

Colin Thomas will attend Lake Superior State University.

Arthur Trevino is part of Business Professionals of America and will study hardware engineering at an undecided college.

Corinne Waucaush is in the journal club and will be studying veterinary technology at Lake Superior State University.

Tessa Wollever is a member of Business Professionals of America and is undecided about choosing a college,

Ashlyn Zenner is with Business Professionals of America and will be studying business at Ferris State University.
