Easter: We will overcome uncertainty, insecurity -Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret’d) on Thursday urged Nigerians not to give up in the face of the troubling challenges besetting the nation.

In his Easter 2022 message to Nigerians, Buhari expressed his optimism that Nigeria would soon overcome its problems of uncertainty and insecurity.

He called on Nigerians to continue to love each other, avoid hatred and be patriotic for the greater good of society.

“Easter evokes in us the resilience of the human spirit not to give up in the face of life’s seemingly daunting challenges,” Buhari remarked.

“This period emboldens us to believe that the current wave of uncertainty and insecurity will soon usher in a season of triumph of good over evil; hope over despair and light over darkness,” he said.

The President also urged Nigerians, in the spirit of the season, to show “love for each other, rather than hate – and to show more patriotism, as it is the only country that we have”.

“I therefore enjoin us to live the eternal words of Jesus Christ on the cross where he said: ‘Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they’re doing.”

“Let us remember that the scriptural emphasis of love has so much relevance for us today as a nation more than ever before,” Buhari pleaded.

Describing this year’s celebration as very unique for Christianity in Nigeria and around the world, the President recognized the 40-day period of Lent as an opportune time “when the faithful are expected to fast, pray, help the poor, abhor injustice and strife, to give alms, and to devote oneself penitently to the examination of conscience and the repentance of sins”.

“Similar values apply to the Muslim faithful, currently halfway through the holy month of Ramadan.

“For us – as a nation, the Easter message, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after crucifixion and burial, reminds us of the power of divine love, faith and redemption.

“As we approach another election campaign season, let the security and unity of the nation guide our actions and statements.

“I wish all Nigerians a happy and blessed Easter,” the President summed up.

So far, the federal government, in a statement signed Tuesday by its interior minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, through the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, has released the Easter holiday schedule.

The press release highlighted on Friday, April 15, 2022 (Good Friday) and monday (Easter Monday), April 18, 2022, as public holidays – in commemoration of Easter celebrations in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
