“Cycle Synchronization:” Why Matching Your Lifestyle With Your Period Could Benefit You


CAPE CORAL, Fla .– It’s a trend among women that is all the rage. Cycle Syncing is all about changing your lifestyle to match your menstrual cycle.

Nicole Kerr is a fitness enthusiast and owner of the Vitaride Cycle Studio in Cape Town.

“So usually when I work out I do some sort of program like a HIIT program in a gym,” Kerr explained. “And then of course, I teach spin as well, a few times a week in my own studio here.”

But sometimes her own cycle makes her want to not participate in physical cycling.

“On the days when I start to feel this cycle happening or two weeks before my cycle, okay, I’m very conscious of my body. I’m aware that I’m getting more and more tired, ”Kerr said.

So these days she makes adjustments. “When it hits me really hard, it’s when I’m doing yoga or, like I said, stretching,” Kerr said.

“Most women are too busy taking care of other people’s bodies on top of their own,” said Dr. Heather Auld, who practices gynecology and integrative medicine.

Auld, along with her partner, Teresa Spano, naturopathic consultant, points out that women are careful about what their bodies tell them.

“The most important thing really is knowing how to listen to your body and knowing where you are in your cycle,” Spano said.

And there are easy ways to do it. Fitness trackers are a great tool to help you know where you are in your menstrual cycle.

Additionally, Spano says there are questions you can jot down the answers to each morning:

  • “How is your energy? ”
  • “Did you sleep well last night?” “
  • “Are you feeling more anxious?” ”
  • “Are you bloated?”
  • “Are your intestines different? ”

“Little things like that can really go a long way,” Spano said.

Also, eat particular foods according to this time of the month.

“Your berries are a very good detoxifier and very good antioxidants, which goes a long way in providing support and energy to your body,” said Dr. Auld.

Spano says there’s what’s called a “seed diet” to support your hormones throughout the month, which some women swear by.

“So the first half of your cycle, you use more pumpkin seeds than flax seeds. While the second half, sunflower and sesame, ”explained Spano.

At the end of the line : Getting in sync with your cycle and making small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Period.

“You can really help yourself by making these little changes, especially around this time of the month,” Kerr said.

“Women are taking control of their lives and their bodies in a way that they never had in the past, so this is a really good trend,” Dr Auld added.
